Colloquium in Celebration of W.V.O. Quine – Call for papers

We are pleased to announce the International Postgraduate Conference organised by the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and the young researchers’ group APhEx (Analytical and Philosophical Explanation): “Word and Object”, 50 years later. Colloquium in Celebration of W.V.O. Quine 28-29 May 2010 Department of Philosophical and Epistemological Studies Faculty of Philosophy, University of Rome “La Sapienza” Via Carlo Fea, 2 – Villa Mirafiori First Call for Papers In the fifty years of the publication of Word and Object, the conference aims to celebrate one of America’s most famous and influential philosophers and mathematicians: W.V.O. Quine. The purpose of the conference is to discuss and explore some of the major Quinean theses: his objections to the analytic/synthetic distinction, meaning scepticism, inscrutability of reference, indeterminacy of translation, his views on logic and philosophy of mathematics, his stance on metaphysics and ontological commitment. Keynote Speakers Prof. Cesare Cozzo (University of Roma “La Sapienza”) Prof. Alberto Voltolini (University of Turin) Prof. Stephen White (Tufts University) Submission details We invite all graduate and postgraduate students, who currently work in Quine’s philosophy, to submit papers which should be preferentially in – but not limited to – one of those issues: Epistemological and Linguistic Holism; Naturalism and naturalization; Ontological Relativity and Relativism; Quine on logic and science. Please submit abstracts, written in English and prepared for blind-review, of no more than 500 words. Submissions are made electronically by email attachment to Francesca Ervas at ervas@uniroma3.it and Vera Tripodi at vera.tripodi@uniroma1.it by 1 March 2010. You will be sent a confirmation note after your submission has been received. The file formats .pdf, .rtf and .doc are preferable. Please specify on a separate page name, affiliation, e-mail address, and section in which the paper is to be presented. Successful applicants will be informed on April, 1st.
