L’(in)imaginable – L’aposiopèse dans les mots et dans les images / The (Un)Imaginable – Aposiopesis in Words and Images

L’aposiopèse est un dispositif rhétorique dans lequel un fragment de discours est délibérément laissé incomplet afin de véhiculer l’impression de ne pas vouloir ou de ne pas pouvoir l’achever, et afin de stimuler ceux qui le reçoivent à le compléter suivant leur imagination. La séance vise à promouvoir la recherche et le débat sur ce mécanisme fondamental de l’imaginaire humain : l’imagination n’est pas déclenchée uniquement par ce que les représentations montrent, mais également par ce qu’elles cachent. Parmi les sujets possibles des contributions :
 1)     L’aposiopèse dans l’histoire de l’art et de la rhétorique ; les propositions sur la transposition de ce dispositif rhétorique des représentations verbales aux représentations visuelles et vice versa seront particulièrement appréciées ;
2)     La construction sémiotique de l’aposiopèse : un fragment de discours verbal ou visuel comment peut-il représenter quelque chose comme inimaginable tout en en promouvant l’imagination ?
3)     L’aposiopèse dans l’histoire culturelle : comment les cultures conçoivent-elles les limites de l’imagination ? Selon quelles logiques esthétiques ou éthiques ? Quels métadiscours produisent-elles à propos de ces limites ?
4)     L’aposiopèse dans les sociétés contemporaines : quel est le destin de l’aposiopèse dans les cultures qui semblent ne poser aucune limite au pouvoir de représentation ? Comment l’aposiopèse fonctionne-t-elle dans des contextes multiculturels ?

ENGLISH

Aposiopesis is a rhetorical device in which a fragment of discourse is deliberately left unfinished in order to convey an impression of unwillingness or inability to continue, as well as in order to stimulate the receiver of the discourse to complete it according to her imagination. The session would like to promote investigation and discussion on this fundamental mechanism of the human imaginary: imagination is not triggered only by that which representations show, but also by that which representations hide. Possible topics of contributions include:
 
1)     Aposiopesis in the history of both art and rhetoric; papers that inquire about the transposition of this rhetorical device from verbal into visual representations and vice versa will be particularly appreciated;
2)     The semiotic construction of aposiopesis: how can a fragment of either verbal or visual discourse both represent something as unimaginable and promote its imagination?
3)     Aposiopesis in cultural history: how do cultures conceive of the limits of imagination? According to what aesthetical or ethical rationales? Which meta-discourses do they produce about these limits?
4)     Aposiopesis in contemporary societies: what is the destiny of aposiopesis in cultures that seem to set no aesthetical and ethical limits to the power of representation? How does aposiopesis work in multicultural contexts?
